About this Custom Number paint

Lennie Pond - 1978 Talladega 500 - 75 Years: The Moments Once a top-heralded rookie, Lennie Pond was clinging to relevance by his sixth season in 1978. The Ronnie Elder team he’d been with since his freshman year ceased operations following a meager 1977 campaign and Pond wound up in a new team headed by Harry Ranier. The new team found speed immediately, as Pond rattled off a string of top fives and five poles on the season in the number 54 Chevrolet. Their crowning achievement however came at the Talladega 500 where Pond fought off six cars in a late race dogfight. The Virginia driver took the lead with five laps remaining and held on to score his first career NASCAR Winston Cup win, and the first for what became the formidable Ranier team. Ranier dumped the veteran for 1979, picking up Buddy Baker instead in the renumbered 28 cars. Pond bounced around teams for the next decade, before finally calling it quits in 1989, never again finding victory lane. This paint represents the car Pond drove that day in 1978 at Talladega. The 75 Years project is a series of paints dedicated to the history of NASCAR racing. Follow me for updates: twitter.com/iam27paul
