About this Custom Number paint

Marty Robbins - 1972 Winston 500 - 75 Years: The Moments Country-western singer Marty Robbins became a regular driver at the Nashville Fairgrounds in the 1960s, sometimes appearing at the track and on the Grand Ole Opry stage in the same night. By the 1970s, Robbins was funding his own car part-time on the NASCAR circuit. For 1972, Robbins entered his first Talladega race with a trick up his sleeve. To keep soaring speeds in check, and to slow down the dominant Chrysler and Ford high displacement engines, NASCAR instituted restrictor plates at all tracks for the first time. Robbins's Dodge was equipped with a trick carburetor that could drop out the restrictor and allow the engine to run full-tilt. The car gained 15 miles per hour from his qualifying speed as Robbins rocketed to the front pack. Robbins had an opportunity to take the lead, but lost his nerve and parked the car short of the finish. After the race, Robbins came clean with officials as his sportsmanship wouldn't allow him to take the rookie of the race trophy. Robbins claimed he was "illegal but not cheating." In his words, he only wanted to see what it was like to run with the leaders for once, and didn't intend to get away with it. Robbins was disqualified from the race and given a small fine. This paint represents the number 42 Dodge as it appeared that day at Talladega. The 75 Years project is a series of paints dedicated to the history of NASCAR racing.
