The King of the Outlaws has relinquished his throne. Steve Kinser is easily the most successful sprint car driver in the history of the discipline, but its a career that reached a conclusion on Monday night as the 62-year-old announced his retirement from active competition. The Indiana native made his plans known after the conclusion of the Arctic Cat All Star Circuit of Champions event at Lebanon Valley (New York) Speedway. He told the crowd that the race was "likely" his last. His legacy includes 577 World of Outlaw feature wins, 20 Outlaw championships, seven Kings Royal wins and 12 Knoxville Nationals championships. His official Twitter account confirmed his retirement by tweeting "Help Salute ‘The King’ as he takes his final laps… Use hashtag #KingKinser to bid farewell to the greatest to hold the wheel." NASCAR champion Tony Stewart has owned his entry in recent years and was among those in attendance at Lebanon Valley and among the first to greet him after the drop of the checkered flag. He was also versatile, having competed in both the 1995 Daytona 500 and 1997 Indianapolis 500 and finished 40th and 14th respectively. He was a frequent competitor in the old International Race of Champions Stock Car series. He won the 1994 IROC race at Talladega. Through five decades, Kinser has accumulated 876 sprint car features victories and is listed as a idol among many in the sport across several disciplines. Now Kinser will explore the next stage of his life, one outside of a race car.
